Membership
Information
The IAP is structured into three tiers. In increasing order
of involvement, firms may participate as: Affiliates, Sponsors, or Benefactors.
Department Affiliates and Sponsors are expected to be smaller
companies, that do not have a significant research arm. For such companies, the
program's benefit comes principally through access to our department resources.
The most important of such resources are our human resources (faculty and
students) and our research publications and events (technical reports, invention
disclosures for early evaluation of possible licensing of intellectual property,
colloquia and seminars, and software tools). Access to our resources is
facilitated through on-line repositories, an annual research open house and meeting, and a student job
placement program.
Department Benefactors are expected to be well-established IT
companies with a significant investment in Research and Development (e.g.
well-established research labs, etc.) and with a history of strong relationships
with Universities. For such companies, the benefit goes beyond access to our
resources to that of investing in these resources. Examples of such investments
include sponsorship of specific labs or projects, software/hardware
infrastructure support, fellowships for graduate and undergraduate students, and
faculty development awards.
Contributions by participants in the BU/CS IAP program are
treated as gifts to the department, in the sense that they do not comprise or
imply any contractual obligations or specific deliverables; as such, they may
have favorable taxation status for the donor (please consult your tax counsel
for confirmation). Obviously, this does not preclude participants in the IAP
program from sponsoring other efforts with specific deliverables through the
normal channels for University Sponsored Research under the supervision of
specific faculty members.
The table below summarizes the basic benefits as well as the
schedule of fees for the various levels of IAP participation. Details of these
benefits follow.
