Scope:

Computer networks are rapidly evolving towards a physically heterogeneous but functionally integrated environment consisting of both wired and wireless components. Furthermore, battery-powered networked devices are becoming increasingly more common and mobile ad-hoc and wireless-sensor networks are receiving considerable attention. The issue of reliable data-transport over such networks poses many challenges, and calls for transport-layer solutions that are efficient (e.g., in terms of throughput, energy savings) and easily deployable (e.g., in terms of minimal changes to existing infrastructure).

This special issue seeks original contributions in the design, analysis and experimental evaluation of reliable transport solutions for networks with wireless links. Topics of interest include:

We are particularly interested in solutions that permit the transport layer to flexibly and efficiently adjust its control strategies to the individualized error characteristics (e.g., random errors versus burst errors versus congestion) of the underlying physical sub-networks. In addition, these control strategies may be energy-aware and/or energy-efficient, in support of battery-powered devices. We are also seeking solutions that require minimal changes to existing infrastructure. For example, these solutions may require changes to the server only, leaving (possibly millions of) clients unchanged. Or, they may require the introduction of proxies, leaving both servers and clients unchanged.
