Distributions of Orientations

In ImageRover, orientation distributions are computed at four different scales, ranging from coarse to fine. The presence or absence of dominant orientation(s) at particular scale(s) is employed as a measure of image similarity. ImageRover also considers the placement or composition of textures in the image.

Examples of images with similar distributions of edge orientations:

Dominant vertical edge orientation.

Many edge orientations present; no clear dominant orientation.
