Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Am I eligible?
A: In order to receive a MSDNAA account administered by the CAS CS Department, you must be a Boston University student. Either, enrolled in a Boston University CAS Computer Science course, or a CAS/GRS Computer Science Program.
NOTE: MET students go to http://csatmet.bu.edu

Q. How do I enroll?
A: MSDNAA accounts are generated automatically based on enrollment information in courses and programs. You should receive an e-mail automatically from the MSDNAA with a username and password within a week of enrolling in a course or program. If you do not receive your information after one week, please contact support-windows@cs.bu.edu.

Q. What software is available?
A: For a complete list of available software, visit the Boston University MSDNAA Software Page.

Q. Will my software remain functional after I graduate?
A: Yes, your software will remain functional after your graduate. However, your MSDNAA account will become inactive and you will not be able to download new software or request new keys.

Q. How many times may I download a program?
A: You may download a program as many times as you wish. However, you will only be issued one key.

Q. How many installations is my key valid for?
A: Your key is valid for one installation of the software. If you need to re-install the software, you must contact support-windows@cs.bu.edu

Q. What if I forget my key?
A: After logging on to the BU MSDNAA site, you may review issued keys, by selecting "My Software", then choosing a program you have downloaded, and clicking "Download" as though you were going to download the software again. This will display the key that was issued.

Q. Do I have to download software, to get a key?
A: It is not necessary to download software to view your key. When you choose a program, before downloading it, you will be shown the key which was generated for you.

Q. Can I change my assigned password?
A: You can change your default password, after logging in by clicking on the 'My Profile' link.

Q. I forgot my password, what do I do?
A: When logging on, there is a link you can click if you forget your password, which will e-mail it to your computer science e-mail account.

Q. What account do I use to log in?
A: When you are signed up with the MSDNAA, the account you will use will be your login-name@cs.bu.edu. This will be covered in the confirmation e-mail you receive, which will also contain your password. Your password for the MSDNAA will not be the same as your password at BU.

Q. I have downloaded the software, but I am unfamiliar with .iso files. How do I install the software from this format?
A: An .iso file is a CD image (i.e. a copy of a CD stored as a single file). Software from the MSDNAA may sometimes be packaged in this way. You will need an application that can write this image to a blank CD. Once written, you may install the software from the CD. Applications that can burn images to a CD are: Nero Burning ROM, Easy CD Creator, and many more. A search on the internet should yield additional burning applications.
