Undergraduate Newsletter for October, 2001 ------------------------------------------ Dear CS Student: In previous years I have sent out a summer letter to give you the latest department news in preparation for the Fall term, and it seems worth doing this on a regular basis. October Topics: o Spring Semester Advising o IBM Information Session and Mixer o Reminders about the Career Management Tool and MentorNet on our IAP/Resources page Spring Semester Advising ------------------------ The advising period for Spring 2002 courses is upon us; the details for the CS Department process can be found at the following URL: www.cs.bu.edu/advising/Home.html I will just summarize the most important issues here: (i) As usual, there are many changes that have occurred in the class schedule, and consequently the "official" BU class schedule and our web schedule for the Spring are quite different! As in previous years, note that THE DEPARTMENT SCHEDULE IS THE MOST ACCURATE ONE (sorry to shout), and any changes we make or hear about are updated asap. See the schedule at http://www.cs.bu.edu/courses/spring2002.html Room locations are being confirmed and will be posted soon. (ii) The most egregious mistake in the BU schedule is that CS 330 was left out! It is indeed being offered. Please see the spring schedule on our web page for the correct date and time. (iii) The advising algorithm is the same as last year, and can be viewed at the URL listed in the first paragraph; the most important points to remember are: (a) Advising appointments start this week; make sure that you sign up on your advisor's signup sheet (outside his/her door) in plenty of time before your TelReg/WebReg date. (b) Make sure you fill out the CS Major Requirements form (available on our advising page) BEFORE your meeting. (c) You can find out your advisor's name on the Student Link; if you do not yet have an advisor, go to the CS office to be assigned one. (d) If there is any problem or concern that can not be addressed within our normal procedures, please don't hesitate to contact me directly (snyder@cs.bu.edu). IBM Information Session and Mixer --------------------------------- Please take note that IBM (a member of our Industrial Affiliates Program) is hosting an Information Session and Mixer. Recruiters will be available to discuss careers at IBM; food and beverages will be served. Here are the coordinates: Tuesday, October 23rd, 2001 (tomorrow!) 6:30--8pm 730 Commonwealth Avenue Room 302 (third floor) In the current hiring environment, you should take every opportunity to find out about the job scene, hope to see you there! CS Department Career Management Tool ------------------------------------ As part of our Industrial Affiliates Program, Professor Matta has arranged for a job resource page for our undergraduates and graduate students. You post your resume, and we will distribute these to our IAP partners; in addition, faculty get calls occasionally from companies looking for students, and this is the place we will look for good matches. Post your resume, post your resume, post your resume!! And then check back occasionally to look for job postings! The page can be found under "Resources/Career Management Tool" at http://www.cs.bu.edu/IAP/. MentorNet --------- Our chairman Azer Bestavros already sent mail about this, but please remember to take a look at MentorNet if you are interested in exchanging email with professional, for advice, perspective, and career opportunities. You can check it out at the link right below the Career Management Tool on our IAP/Resources page.
