Women in Computer Science at Boston University

Nationwide women students are underrepresented in computer science. To give women students in the CS Department at BU an opportunity to interact with each other, share experiences, and discuss and address concerns, Prof. Margrit Betke organizes "Women in Computer Science" seminars. Information about career opportunities, scholarships, and other opportunities are provided. Four women graduate students, for example, were supported by the CS Department to attend the Grace-Hopper Conference in 2002.

The seminars have included presentations by student speakers. Chekema Prince, for example, talked about her project as an undergraduate research assistant in 2001. In April 2003, Rebecca Norlander, an alumna with a leadership role at Microsoft, visited our department and spoke about her experiences as a woman in the profession.

The women in the department are involved in various fun outreach projects (see links below for Pathways demos, Brownie troop pictures, TeacherTech, etc). There are also special programs introducing women to research, see, for example,

Sarah Dubauskas and Kenda Stuart's CREW-2002-2003 Project
Jessie Burger's and Christen Ng's CRA Summer 2003 Project
Diane Hirsh's CRA project and BA thesis.

Association for Women in Computing
The Society of Women Engineers
IEEE Women in Engineering Committee
National Research Council of the National Academies: Committee on Women in Science and Engineering (CWSE)
MentorNet MentorNet is The E-Mentoring Network for Women in Engineering and Science. Women who are studying engineering or science are paired with professional scientists and engineers working in industry, to help them form email-based mentoring relationships.

Conferences

Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing. The conference is typically in October every year. Please contact Prof. Margrit Betke (betke@cs.bu.edu) if you are interested in attending this conference so that she can help you to apply for funding for the trip.
