Figure 2: Behavior of TCP
with and without the mechanism - long distance
Trace data of the simulation of an HTTP server sending
data to clients located on one distant computer. The computer used on the
server side was a Dell XPS Pro200n running Linux 2.0.0 and was located
in Boston, MA. On the client side we had an RS/6000 running AIX 4.1.5 which
was located in Paris, France. The average round-trip measured at the time
of the experiment was 148 ms and there were 19 hops between the two machines.
As in Figure 1, the size of the data sent during
each TCP connection was 32 KB, the x-axis is the time at which a
packet was sent and the y-axis is the sequence number of that packet. The
lower curve shows the behavior of the conventional implementation of TCP
while the upper curve shows what happens when the remembering mechanism
is used. There is no artificial delay involved in this graph either.
