It’s with a heavy heart that I share the passing of Professor Margrit Betke—a brilliant researcher, dedicated
mentor, and deeply kind human being. Margrit was a trusted professional mentor to me for many years, and in
recent years, we had the opportunity to collaborate closely on several research projects. Just a couple of
months ago, we submitted a joint patent, and our last paper together was submitted only weeks ago. Margrit
remained an active and passionate researcher until her final days—an inspiration to all who worked with her.
Margrit was so deeply loved. Her hospital room was filled with colleagues and students who flew in from across
the country to be by her side. Neighbors came in with flowers picked from her garden. It was a powerful
reflection of the community she built through her kindness, generosity, and unwavering support of others.
During my last visit with colleagues, we had the chance to express how much impact she had on our lives, both
professionally and personally. As she tightly held my hand, she responded with warmth and encouragement: “You
will also have a big impact on the lives of many being a professor.” That moment is one I will carry with me
always.
Margrit’s legacy lives on through the many students, researchers, and colleagues she guided and inspired. I am
forever grateful for her brilliance, her warmth, and her impact on my life.
You will be deeply missed, Margrit.
