======================================================================== Subject: HW3 hints Here are some things to keep in mind while completing Homework #3. Question #1 ----------- 1. Pay careful attention to what each part of the question is asking you for. Is it asking your for a search by _subject_ or _title_? Does it ask you to search using the beginning of a subject, title, etc. or using _part_ (not necessarily at the beginning) of it? Does it ask you for how many entries (books, articles, etc.) you found or does it ask you to list their titles? Since it is possible that someone might do a search correctly, but by a slightly different search method, then you might want to _BRIEFLY_ describe how you did your search in your answer. For example, in discussion sections, I did: - SUBJECT search for "artificial intelligence", limited by: - LOCATION of Sci/Eng library OR - TITLES CONTAINING "expert system" 2. You will not be able to use the P)RINT option to print screens when you do library lookups by connecting to the library machine (i.e., as you do in this problem by "telnet tomus"). Question #3 ----------- 1. When you post an article to the group bu.test, you will not see your article right away in the list of _threads_ (we discussed what a thread was in discussion sections). You will have to get out of the newsgroup and then go back in it before you will see your message. You may also have to wait a while before it gets there. So, my advice is to: - post a message - get out of tin - go do something else for a while, and then - check it later. Rob ======================================================================== Subject: Creating your Home Page I said earlier that you can look at the web page that describes how to use HTML to create your home page using the instructions in HW3 #4. I'll be a more explicit about how to look at this web page, here are the steps: - Start Mosaic - Click on the "Open..." button on the bottom of the Mosaic window with the left mouse button. This will bring up a new window where you can enter the location (URL) of a web page. - In this new window, move the mouse pointer into the box next to the "URL To Open:" prompt, this is where you will enter the URL. (You may have to click in this box with the left mouse button). - Type in the URL _exactly_ from the homework, it is: file:/home/course/cs101a1/Syntax.html - Hit and it should display the page called "CS101 - Creating your Home Page". Rob ======================================================================== Subject: Problem with my homepage... Someone asked: > For some reason that I can't figure out, two of the > pointers/anchors I've placed in my homepage refuse to bring up the > requested information. I've checked for typos on each of them several > times and everything looks fine, but they still don't work. > ... The pointer that you put in your home page via the tag, e.g., Courses has to have the URL^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Are you using the document `Title' by mistake? Notice that Mosaic displays the document TITLE and URL at the top of its window for a web page you are currently viewing. Rob ======================================================================== Subject: TIN question > Rob, I posted a letter in "tin", but after I went back and checked that it > was there, it erased it after I read it. Is this suppose to happen? Was I > suppose to mark it as unread to keep it? Am I all set for prob. 3 of HW #3 > then? Yes, this is the correct behavior. Once you read all the articles in a `thread' (sometimes only 1), it will mark the thread as read and you will not see it again next time you enter the newsgroup. If you want to mark a thread as unread while you have the highlighted bar on that thread, you use the Z (uppercase Z) command, which is listed under h)elp. If you want to mark a whole group as unread, you go to the main `tin' screen where it lists group names, place the highlighted bar on the group and use the z function. Again, the z function is listed in the main screen's h)elp. You should be all set for the news posting problem....To make sure, mark the bu.test group as unread, go into it and see if your post is there. Rob
