A Cross-Layer Approach to Securing Wireless Communications

Dina Katabi (MIT)

The traditional approach to communication security relies mainly on cryptographic protocols. The difficulty with this approach stems from the need for key distribution, a process known to be hard and in some cases infeasible. In this talk, we show that it is possible to design the communication signal to strengthen cryptographic methods and alleviate the need for prior key distribution. In particular, we demonstrate a cross-layer design that can secure medical implants without access to the implant itself. We also use a cross-layer design to deliver the first in-band protocol that establishes secure wireless connections without requiring users to enter passwords or have secret keys.
